Dudes, I'm gettin' a Dell!
Okay, so I already had a Dell, but I'm getting another one! Almost same processor I have currently (P4, 2.4Ghz currently, new one is P4 2.8Ghz) but more RAM (3G!), bigger HD (and it's SATA vs my current ATA), DVD-RW, and, most importantly, more physical space to upgrade. My current 'puter is a slimline Optiplex with no extra drive bays or anything and only a CD-RW. Also it keeps frying hard drives - I suspect the small space is part of the problem - overheating. Apparently it's been a problem with these slimline cases that the hard drives fry pretty easy. I'm going to run Windows XP Pro on the new puppy, but that was a bit of a battle. They want to ship everything with Vista these days and I do not want Vista. It's a memory hog with no appreciable improvement over XP. No thank you. Microsoft has stopped producing XP in order to force people over to Vista, but you just know the manufacturers still have a nice inventory of XP. It's a matter of having a hissy fit to get it.
I do feel a little bit like I'm abandoning my open-source principles, but I will use Open Office on the new machine so that makes me feel a little better. I will still run Edubuntu on the old machine for the kids to use it.

Why the Toaster Poll?
Here's the deal: Everytime we stay with my in-laws, I am amazed at the anal-retentive cleaning routines. I'm jealous of their cleanliness and efficiency, but don't think even with serious "re-training" I could ever even approach that level of spotlessness.
Anyway, one of their practices is to empty the toaster crumb tray (that little door in the bottom of the toaster) after each time the toaster is used. They really clean it out and keep the toaster looking brand-freaking-new at all times. I grew up in a less fastidious household and it just never occurred to me to clean the toaster after every use.
My siblings-in-law also clean the toaster after every use and are amazed and shocked that I don't and grew up in a household where this did not take place. This made me curious as to how often other people clean the crumbs from the toaster. They almost had me convinced that the majority of people do empty the crumb tray after every use and that my family were incredibly unhygienic lazy pigs. Lazy definitely applies to me, but I really strive to avoid unhygienic.
Is it a sex blog? A mommy blog? A bitch & moan blog? Um, . . . yeah. This is my place to be totally honest. In my real life, I feel like I'm always lying to somebody about something. Here, I am totally honest. Brutally so. However, no matter what bad things I say about my kids, I adore them and would never ever really, say, sell them on Ebay. The husband, often referred to as Spousehole, is another story. Oh yeah - if you are under 18 (or if you are my husband), please leave now.

OK, Bunny; here is where I confess that 'Princess Bride' is one of my guilty pleasures. Get me in the right mood, and I'll be walking around the house saying, "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
And, I'm right there with you on your over-rated actors list. . .
I will brush off or wipe down the exterior of the toaster as needed, but I admit to forgetting about the crumbs until the smoke alarm goes off.
I'm adding Cameron Diaz to the list of overrated.
Come over to the light - get a Mac!
I had a slimline, years ago (not a dell) and had similar problems. I ended up gutting it, except for a mini-tower case, and all the original components worked for several years after that. Good luck, I've had our "non slimline" Dell for a long time, been a great machine.
Toaster, I clean when the little door falls open. Definitely not after every use.
Toaster cleaning - sometimes it happens. Not really sure when, but typically before smoke happens. Cleaning is definitely not related to when toast is toasted.
I also like The Princess Bride (As You Wish).
Cleaning the toaster crumbs? Maybe twice in the lifetime of my last toaster. They must have one hell of a toaster!
Well, actually Vista (with Service Pack 1) does show performance improvements over XP in a certain realm: Graphics.
However, if you are not into PC Gaming and/or Graphics heavy applications, then yes, XP is probably just as good and a lot less friggin annoying than Vista. Vista is built on 64 bit technology utilization Direct-X 10.
Which doesnt mean squat if you are using your 'puter mainly for office/internet/low graphics applications.
And yeah Vista is a memory hog compared to XP. But 4 gigs of memory runs Vista and everything else pretty smooth and 4 gigs is cheap these days. They have made a 64 bit version of XP but Microsoft has pretty much said they are stopping support of XP.
I used to buy Dells, they make a decent system. These days I prefer to build my own systems, its cheaper and I get more bang for my buck where I want it.
Ok damn that was a totally boring comment lol...
I HATE Vista.
I totally agree with your overrated actors/actresses aghhh!
1. Size matters!! Dell has a problem with overheating period. It's not the size of the case, it's the size of the fan.
2. Your in-laws are toaster crumb freaks. I'm lucky if I *think* about cleaning it twice a year.
I'm getting a new Dell at work, too. I've never had one before. I'm a Dell virgin. LOL!
But I made sure to go with the company that offered up XP as an option because they have some stock-piled. I did NOT want Vista because our computer software people said it would be harder for them to log in remotely and update our customized software.
Um....like 2x a year? I don't think my family ever cleans that out, and my mom is super anal retentive about cleaning, so don't feel bad.
Fun times with the computer!
